Episode 38: X-Men Unlimited

So if you’re just tuning in, the X-men related books so far have had the weakest showing on this podcast. Add to that, host Nathaniel Wayne’s only other encounter with an “Unlimited” title was the abomination of Fantastic Four Unlimited #1. It’s hard to stay optimistic, but let’s see what happens.

  1. I was excited when this one showed up on my queue as I suspected (hoped) this issue would break the dreaded Curse of the X-Books. I remember having this comic, although I confess I mis-remembered the opening splash page with Cyclops’ optic energy leaking out of his eye sockets being the cover, so I guess you’re right about the intensity of that opening page. I also didn’t remember anything about the villain you covered in this issue, but I remember the character beats with Scott, Ororo, and the Professor, which, as you say, is why this story holds up better than many of the other books you’ve retried on this show.

Chris Bacchalo was, by a huge margin, my favorite artist who worked on the X-books in the ’90s and 2000s. His style got progressively weirder and sometimes hard to follow, but I’ll always hold his work on GENERATION X (which he co-created with Lobdell) close to my heart.
