Episode 35: Aliens Colonial Marines #1

Even as Fox was unleashing Alien 3 to annoy fans the world over, Dark Horse seemed to realize that there was much more mileage to be had in sticking to the parts of the first sequel that folks seemed to like. Thus was birthed Aliens Colonial Marines. It was well remembered enough that the brand name carried through to a more recent video game (which was so bad that people sued each other over who was the blame for it.) Let’s see if the comic book holds up at all.

  1. Frank says:

I spent something like two grand last year on Colonial Marines, so I definitely have a greater interest in their lot than you’d seem to expect. I paid a premium to have ease of access in meeting most of the major actors from Aliens that attended Comicpalooza 2016’s cast reunion, ahead of San Diego announcing the same (and then doing Houston two better by getting the absent Lance Henrickson and James Cameron.) I got to meet and get signatures from Ripley, Newt, Hicks, Hudson, Vasquez, Burke, Gorman, Drake, Frost, Dietrich and Spunkmeyer. Because I have to be different, I had them autograph original art I’d commissioned of their characters, which you can see here:

I also got Mark Nelson to draw an Alien Queen, so I could get signatures on that piece from the entire creative team of the first Dark Horse mini-series and some technical people from the movies and games. I have a great affection for the characters used in Aliens, and it’s the colorful cast that make it one of my favorite movies.

All that having been said, this comic book littered the quarter bin of a shop I worked at in the mid-90s, but I don’t recall ever reading the issue. Either it was that unmemorable, or I was less motivated to care twenty years ago as I did in 2016.

  2. I think the only Aliens comics I bought and read were the Hive mini-series, which was a different take, I think neither retread nor gonzo, mostly for the Kelly Jones art though. Been a while but I think it was about a geneticist growing his own alien.

As for the number of itunes reviews you’re sitting on, you might want to check other countries’ versions of itunes, which annoyingly separates comments from country to country (or I guess they’d call it store to store). I left one on the Canadian side long ago.
